This selection of paintings recognizes a significant shift in Walter Matthews’ work since he attended Ringling College. Matthews acknowledges a “new immediacy” in these “fast” paintings. His paintings on wood panel with oil and other media manifest a “lightness.” They are no longer dependent on the “big stroke” of his previous work. This new work that is essentially abstract and may have some suggestion of reference investigates “how you address ‘real’ space in painting.” What is evident in this new work is “a level of restraint” with paint as his use of it is “economical” and serves his new aesthetic.
